"product level is insufficient" message during flat file import

I'm using the import wizard to create a new table from a flat file source. The table gets created but no data gets copied. What's wrong? Here's the report:

SSIS ships as part of SQL 2005, but the setup give you a choice of whether to install it or not.

Please rerun the setup. In one of the first screens the setup program asks which components to installs, there are 5 checkboxes total: SQL/SSAS/SSRS/SSIS and Workstation components. Please make sure the SSIS check box is checked.

|||"Integration Services" is greyed-out as an installation option, I'm guessing, because I'm running XP. It seems odd that I can install Management Studio but cannot use the import-export wizard. Is this right? IS is not considered to be a "client tool" which the documentation says can be installed on XP?|||

Thanks for reporting this problem, it seems like we have a bug here.

Some components of SSIS (e.g. designer) are installed and work with 'Workstation Components' install. Other components of SSIS (e.g. service, dtexec, and dtexecui) require installation of 'Integration Services'.

In current build the wizard can't execute the package it created without 'Integration Services' installation, which for Enterprise Edition means you need Server OS. You can still save the package and run or schedule it on machine with SSIS installed.

We will fix this problem for SP1 release, the wizard should be able to run the package with just 'Workstation Components' install. Unfortunately, we missed this problem.

Thanks,
Michael.

|||I got around the problem (hope I haven't created any others) by uninstalling Enterprise Edition and installing Developer Edition which allows all installation options. I added IS to the install and then successfully ran the import/export wizard.|||

I ran into the same thing in September CTP with an attempted import of an Excel 2003 spreadsheet. I had installed SSIS and was consistently running numerous fairly sophisticated ETL packages between MSSQL Server 2005, MSSQL Server 2000, Oracle and other sources. It does not appear that the error is related to SSIS not being installed.

Thanks.

|||And BTW - I immediately got it to work after importing the sheet into MS Access, and then using MS Access as the import source for MSSQL Server 2005 ...

Thanks.|||

I'm getting this same error when using the RTM release of the SQL Management Studio Import wizard to import data from Excel into SQL 2000. Does anyone know how to fix this?

We've reconsidered this issue, and will be providing a fix for SP1 release.

For now, you need to install SSIS to run the package in the wizard.

|||I too am experiencing this same problem. I am using the standard version of SQL Server Management Studio that I obtained for free at the SQL Server 2005 launch party in San Francisco. I am running Windows XP. I have tried to migrate tables from my remote SQL Server 2000 DB without success. Exporting to Access was successful, but when I import to the new DB I get the following errors:

I just wanted to weigh in and say that it would seem like this would be important enough for a quick 'hotfix'. Ease of migration using these tools is by far the most important reason I switched from MySQL to SQL Server and with these functions not working it is a real bummer.
Can anyone suggest a temporary work-aruond?

|||Damien, your problem is completely unrelated to "product level" issue. SSIS ships as part of SQL 2005, but the setup give you a choice of whether to install it or not.

Thanks,
Michael.

Thanks,
Michael.

"ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE"?

Hi,

I am migrating from MySQL to SQL Express. In MySQL, I import data from Oracle using the "INSERT INTO .... ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE". With the "ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE", when there is a duplicate key in MySQL exists, the respective records will be updated (so to avoid inserting the data twice). I cannot remove the duplicated rows in MySQL as it contains extra fields with user-input value.

Is there any way I can do the same in SQL Express? Is it a must that I need to create a temp table to hold the downloaded data and then update the duplicated data in the original before an INSERT?

Thanks

Raymond

There is no equivalent functionality. You can however do the following:

1. You can create an unique index on the key column(s) with the IGNORE_DUP_KEY option set to on. This will result in the duplicate rows being ignored during the INSERT operation for instance. You will have to however update the rows by inserting into another table and then performing update

2. Use a worktable approach where you insert all the rows into the worktable and then use insert/update as into the main table.

|||

Thanks,

I think I will go for the second option, as there is only a few new records (inserts) every time, and most the other records involve changes (updates).

"Cannot truncate table 'Database.dbo.Table' because it is being referenced by a FOREIGN K

Here is my issue I am new to 2005 sql server, and am trying to take my old data which is exported to a txt file and import it to tables in sql. The older database is non relational, and I had made several exports for the way I want to build my tables. I built my packages fine and everything is working until I start building relationships. I remove my foreign key and the table with the primary key will get updated for the package again. I need to update the data daily into sql, and once in it will only be update from the package until the database is moved over.

It will run and update with a primary key until I add a foreign key to another database.

Here is my error when running the package when table 2 has a foreign key.

[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "TRUNCATE TABLE [consumer].[dbo].[Client] " failed with the following error: "Cannot truncate table 'consumer.dbo.Client' because it is being referenced by a FOREIGN KEY constraint.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

You are trying to delete all data out of Client, but are prevent when there is FK. Find out table is related to Client by the FK, perhaps something relate dto teh client like the client's orders? You will need to delete that table first to keep with the current method.

If you do not want delete this other table, then you should not be deleting clients either. You cannot apply a relationship and then expect to be able to violate it during a load.

There are three methods youd could use to avoid this error -

Delete all tables, but in order.

Do not delete. When loading clients detect existing clients and update, versus inserting new clients.

Disable the constraint for the duration of the load, and then reenable afterwards. You can just write some simple T-SQL, ALTER TABLE... to do this, and run it at the start and end of your package so as to disable and enable the constriant(s) respectively. Use some Execute SQL Tasks to run the T-SQL.

|||

I totally understand what you are saying, and I can't delete the table while there is a relationship. I read this article http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2006/02/17/2877.aspx that was posted in the forum. I was unable to disable the constraint would I want to disable the PK or FK and from the table I am trying to update or the FK that has the issue.

"Attempted to read or write protected memory error" in SSIS

I'm trying to import data from a Sybase ASE 12.0 database called "OurTestDatabase" into MS SQL Server 2005. I started SSIS Wizard and indicated "Sybase ASE OLEDB Provider" as a source and SQL Native Client as the target. I'm gettign the following error message:

--

Cannot get supported data types from the database connection

"Provider=Sybase.ASEOLDEDBProvider;Password=;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=sa;Data Source=sybase;Initial Catalog=OurTestDatabase"

Additional information

|_ Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt. (System.Data)

--

The same data source worked with DTS when we thought we'd convert to MS SQL Server 2000. Is this a bug in SSIS? What can be done? Using ".Net Framework Provider for ODBC" is not a good option because this doesn't allow me to choose any tables from the Sybase source.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Did you get the chance ti figure out what was the problem. I do get the similar error while accessing AS400 database.

its fail in :

// Summary:

// Fixes any errors identified during design-time validation that result in

// the component returning Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Pipeline.Wrapper.DTSValidationStatus.VS_NEEDSNEWMETADATA.

void ReinitializeMetaData();

where its suppose to identify the errors in metadata it seems.

I still am investigating my metadata for AS400 tables.

Hope This helps you.

|||

I'm not sure that we can help debug in detail - we have not tested the Sybase drivers and don't know what behaviour they typically report.

However, most likely the issue arises because the Sybase provider does not support methods we are calling to get data types for columns. I have seen similar issues with the Sybase provider and linked servers. You may want to check with Sybase to see if they have tested their provider with SSIS.

The .Net provider for ODBC may be a workaround in terms of getting column level metadata. You are right that in the present version you cannot browse tables or views. However, although the provider does not list tables, it is still possible to access them, but you need to write the query yourself.

Donald

|||The same error came up when I used the ODBC drivers to access Sybase ASE|||

That sounds like a Sybase issue, then. Have you checked with them, or tested the same calls to the driver with other clients?

However, most likely the issue arises because the Sybase provider does not support methods we are calling to get data types for columns. I have seen similar issues with the Sybase provider and linked servers. You may want to check with Sybase to see if they have tested their provider with SSIS.

The .Net provider for ODBC may be a workaround in terms of getting column level metadata. You are right that in the present version you cannot browse tables or views. However, although the provider does not list tables, it is still possible to access them, but you need to write the query yourself.

That sounds like a Sybase issue, then. Have you checked with them, or tested the same calls to the driver with other clients?
