(different) error logging onto sql server / database help

When trying to connect to my sql server I get the following error :

Connection Failed :
SQLState:'08001'
SQL Server Error : 17
[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect))(.[SQL Server Does not exist or access denied]

im not sure how to give a user access or give the user the right password

I get the same error when trying to create a database and connect to the server.

Im working on xp pro, and using VS.net. also theres a red x next to the cylinder of the sql server, so im assuming im doing something wrong.Check these two things first:
Make sure the authentication method is the same in your pages as the way it's set up on the server

Also - if it's sql/mixed- make sure the login userID and PWD are correct.|||this is the line i have in the web.config file

<identity impersonate="true" userName="MIKE-\Michael"
password="cuomo23"/
how do I check what method is being used on the pages. and the server is which i choose, either windows nt. or sql? correct?|||is mike-\michael a valid user in the SQL database or the Windows Domain? Looks like a local machine account rather than a domain account. So is you web machine the same as the SQL server machine?

(393) Waiting for SQL Server to recover database

We're running SQL Server 200 SP3, operating in thread mode, and have
recently encountered the following problem.
SQL Server Agent shows as started but if we try to access any jobs we get
the message
"Error 14258: Cannot perform this operation while SQL Server Agent is
starting. Try again later"
When we access the SQL SErver Agent error log the most recent entry is
"(393) Waiting for SQL Server to recover database"
There is no recovery outstanding and we are unable to resolve this by
stopping and starting the agent, the database or the server."Thread mode" '
If you have Fibers switched on, stuff like Agent and xp_cmdshell, sp_OA* and
other functions don't behave as expected.

Any constructive ideas would be appreciated.

"Your upgrade is blocked"

I am getting the following error message when I tried installing the 2005 Developer Edition from the MSDN kit. I previously installed the 2005 Express Edition, and it worked just fine, so I thought that the install failed as it was at a lower version than the Express Edition. I uninstalled the SQLExpress Edition, however, when I try to install SQL Server 2005 again, I get the following message:

Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools

Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

Build version check:

Your upgrade is blocked because the existing component is a later version than the version you are trying to upgrade to. To modify an existing SQL Server component, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, select the component you would like to modify, and then click Change/Remove.

I have also installed Visual Studio NET, and I wonder if some component in the Studio app is holding back the SQL Server install. I have uninstalled all SQL components several times already, and I keep on getting this message.

Gregory

Gregory, when you go to Add/Remove Programs, do you see any SQL 2005 installation info there? If so, what versions does the report say?

Also, what version of SQL Server Express did you install? RTM or SP1?

"Select all" as default for a multi-value parameter

Hi!

I have the following problem:

In my report I have -among others- a multi-value parameter, populated by a query (so I cannot a priori know the content of the list).

I would like my report to start without any user choice, through default parameters, so what I need is the "select all" choice selected by default. How can I achieve this?

[The only default value I am able to pass to the multi-value parameter is one of the elements populating the list, statically writing it in the "Non-queried" section of "Default values": "From query" option seems not to work for multi-valued]

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Stefano

...Does anybody know how to accomplish this?

(...or the reason why this is impossible?)

"Report is being generated"

Hi

I have a windows application. I am using following code right after setting the LocalReport ReportPath. Report rendering is too slow if use following line of code and Report viewer does not show spiny and the text that says “Report is being generated.”

Me.ReportViewer1.SetDisplayMode(DisplayMode.PrintLayout)

Me.ReportViewer1.ZoomMode = ZoomMode.Percent

Me.ReportViewer1.ZoomPercent = 80

Please advise how can make it fast and show spiny.

Thanks in advance.

As to how to make it fast, you need to either increase the horsepower of your system or optimize your SQL query.

As to the spiny thingy, I believe that setting the zoom on the report viewer changes the zoom of the report once it is rendered. From what I can tell, the spiny thingy is rendered prior to the report being rendered.

I think the report viewer is actually showing the spiny thingy, but your report viewer is too large and the spiny thingy always appears in the middle of the report viewer.

I've yet to find an answer as to how to move the spiny thingy closer to the upper left corner of the screen. If you figure it out, let me know!

|||

Thanks for your reply. I think it is not related with SQL server query or system speed. If I take out following line of code it works superfast and spiny also appears.

Me.ReportViewer1.SetDisplayMode(DisplayMode.PrintLayout)

Me.ReportViewer1.ZoomMode = ZoomMode.Percent

Me.ReportViewer1.ZoomPercent = 80

I am getting a dataset from the server and then assigning that dataset to RDL file in Windows application at client side so there is no SQL server involved.

Spiny does not appear even after taking out Zoom mode and zoom percent. I guess something is wrong with setting DisplayMode.PrintLayout.

|||Any answer?|||

Just a reality check on Mr. Spiny:

Are you executing this report asynchronously?

>L<

|||Yes.|||Then, see here http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=231258&SiteID=1

|||

Thanks Lisa,

I am using a Report Viewer for Windows application and I guess by default AsyncRendering is True. I did not find any way to make it false to give a try. I am still not able to figure it out why "SetDisplayMode(DisplayMode.PrintLayout)" making report rendering so slow and also it is making spiny to disapear.

Appreciate you help.

|||

Hi there,

Of course you're right that there is this difference between web and winform usage -- and I often forget which we're talking about <sigh>. I apologize.

Did you try using the ShowProgress property to get Mr. Spiny?

You probably haven't touched it at all. And I don't think that setting display mode to false would automatically set ShowProgress False, but it *might* have that effect -- test its value, just in case, after you use the SetDisplayMode method.

Can you verify a couple of things about this report -- what is the interactive page size versus the standard page size? If the two are different, this might explain why you don't see the progress feedback in one case but you do in the other (if the page sizes are significantly different, I mean).

Alternatively, if you have been omitting the zoom-setting lines after the SetDisplayMode line when you don't set display mode, then Greg's explanation completely maks sense: the original zoom value shows enough of the page to show the progress feedback, while your chosen zoom value here does not.

"order by" in xquery

Given the following XML data in SQL Server (where each Employee is a separate rowset), is there a way to order by ID using XQuery?

Row 1<Employee><ID>3</ID></Employee>
Rpw 2<Employee><ID>1</ID></Employee>
Row 3<Employee><ID>2</ID></Employee>

Ex:

SELECT Employee.query('
for $emp in /Employee
order by $emp/ID
')

If you want to order multiple rows containing xml data you need to use SQL order by. XQuery order by is scoped to only one XML instance.

Assuming that table t has the Employee column, you can try something like this:

SELECT Employee

FROM t

ORDER BY Employee.value('(/Employee/ID)[1]', 'int')

"Less Than or Equal To" MDX query

The following MDX query is generated by the Reporting Services? I need to edit the this MDX query so that it will accept the parameter value "Less Than Or Equal To" the @.AccountPeriodAccountPeriod parameter to filter teh cube data. Thanks.

SELECT NON EMPTY { [Measures].[Costing], [Measures].[Distinct Count] } ON COLUMNS, NON EMPTY { ([AgencyID].[Agency Id].[Agency Id].ALLMEMBERS * [Account Period].[Account Period].[Account Period].ALLMEMBERS * [Account Period].[Prescription Date].[Prescription Date].ALLMEMBERS * [Drug].[Protocol Code].[Protocol Code].ALLMEMBERS * [Drug].[Drug Name].[Drug Name].ALLMEMBERS ) } DIMENSION PROPERTIES MEMBER_CAPTION, MEMBER_UNIQUE_NAME ON ROWS FROM ( SELECT (STRTOSET(@.AccountPeriodAccountPeriod, CONSTRAINED)) ON COLUMNS FROM ( SELECT ( STRTOSET(@.DrugDrugFirstWord, CONSTRAINED) ) ON COLUMNS FROM [Drug Cost By Account Period])) WHERE ( IIF( STRTOSET(@.DrugDrugFirstWord, CONSTRAINED).Count = 1, STRTOSET(@.DrugDrugFirstWord, CONSTRAINED), [Drug].[Drug First Word].currentmember ) ) CELL PROPERTIES VALUE, BACK_COLOR, FORE_COLOR, FORMATTED_VALUE, FORMAT_STRING, FONT_NAME, FONT_SIZE, FONT_FLAGS

Assuming that there is an [AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod] attribute, ordered ascending by time:

SELECT (Filter([AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod].Members,

Rank([AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod].CurrentMember,

[AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod].Members) < =

Rank(STRTOSET(@.AccountPeriodAccountPeriod, CONSTRAINED).Item(0).Item(0),

[AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod].[AccountPeriod].Members)))

|||Thank you Deepak Puri and it is worked beautifully. However I forgot to include one other condition that only the AgencyID has the Account Period equal to the @.AccountPeriod should be allowed in the final dataset. AgencyID is from another dimension different from the Account Period dimension. Thanks.|||

If you want only those AgencyID members with [Measures].[Costing] data for the selected Account Period, try replacing:

[AgencyID].[Agency Id].[Agency Id].ALLMEMBERS

with:

NonEmpty([AgencyID].[Agency Id].[Agency Id].ALLMEMBERS,

{[Measures].[Costing]} *

STRTOSET(@.AccountPeriodAccountPeriod, CONSTRAINED))

"Invalid authorization specification"

I use SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services Deployment Wizard to generate an xmla deployment script. I get the following error when I try to run it:

<Exception xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:exception" />
<Messages xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:exception">
<Error ErrorCode="3238395904" Description="OLE DB error: OLE DB or ODBC error: Invalid authorization specification; 28000." Source="Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services" HelpFile="" />

</Messages>

In the script, I see the following data sources:

<DataSources>
<DataSource xsi:type="RelationalDataSource">
<ID>Max Min Sales DM</ID>
<Name>Max Min Sales DM</Name>
<ConnectionString>Provider=SQLNCLI.1;Data Source=localhost;Persist Security Info=True;Password=;User ID=;Initial Catalog=MaxMinSalesDM;DataTypeCompatibility=80</ConnectionString>

<ImpersonationInfo>
<ImpersonationMode>Default</ImpersonationMode>
</ImpersonationInfo>
<Timeout>PT0S</Timeout>
</DataSource>
</DataSources>

I am surprised the connection strings don't contain any username/password info since the data source objects have user/password info saved with them when I access the project through Visual Studio. I try manually adding in User ID and Password, rerun, and get a different error:

<root xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:empty">

</Messages>
</root>

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

This is quite common situation you are having: Analysis Server doesnt have permission to access SQL Server relational database.
It takes little while to troubleshoot connectivity problems. You need to make sure you set correctly security credentials required for Anlaysis Server to access relational database.

For one, try and make sure the account Analysis Server runs under can access SQL Server using windows authentication.

There is quite a bit information out there on how to setup connectivity and connection security.

"Failed to create web application" error during installation of SQL 2k5b2

I was installing SSRS 2005 Beta 2 and near completion of the installation, i encountered the following error. I don't know what causes this. How can i avoid this? I've installed the rest of the whole SQL 2K5 package.

Machine : xxxxx
Product : Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services Beta 2
Product Version : 9.00.852
Install : Failed
Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files\SQLSetup0017_xxxxxx_RS.log
Last Action : InstallFinalize
Error String : The setup failed to create web application: /LM/W3SVC/1/Root/Reports. The error code is -2146959355.

Ok its working now. the MS DTC was enabled but not all its options were selected. I selected all of them, and reinstalled it worked.

If there's anyone just as blurr as i am, its available in WinXP thru the

Administrative tools > Component Services option.

In the left console, Expand 'Console Root > Component Services > Computers'. You should see My Computer as the next node.

The funny thing is, on my pc, when right-clicking on My Computer, i couldn't see the 'Properties' option. I had to click 'Configure My Computer' button at the toolbar (should be the last button) to enable MS DTC. AFter that , the properties option was visible on the menu.

Hope this helps anyone who might face this problem.

"Execute on main package thread" (dts2000) still available on ssis ?

Hello Smile

The Navision 4.0 ODBC-driver gives following error when connecting in ssis :
"Internal error 182 in module 1."
The driver doesn't like multi-threading behavior Tongue Tied. In DTS2000, this issue could be solved by turning on the workflow-option "Execute on main package thread" !
I was wondering... is there a way to do this also in SSIS ?

Kind regards Big Smile

Geert G.Interesting issue, for which I have no sure answer. Looking at the properties we have you may like to try the MaxConcurrentExecutables property at the package level, and the EngineThreads property for the Data Flow. These would I assume limit you to one thread, but if that is the main one, I have no idea.|||

Thank you for your reply Smile

Unfortunately when I try to change the 'EngineThreads' to 1, following error occurs:
"Could not set the property value: Error at Data Flow Task [DTS.Pipeline]: The EngineThreads property of the Data Flow task must be between 2 and 60. An attempt was made to set the property to a value that is too small."

Even changing MaxConcurrentExecutables to 1 or 0 doesn't solve the problem Tongue Tied

|||Sorry I didn't test this. Better ask someone who knows what they are talking about. Product Team over to you....

"Duplicated parameter names are not allowed" exception in SQL Server Everywhere

I'm using SQL Server Everywhere CTP with ADO.NET and C# 2.0 and getting following exception:
"Duplicated parameter names are not allowed. [ Parameter name = @.NODE_ID ]"
for the query:

SELECT CHANGE_TYPE,CHANGED,VTRANS,LINK_PARTITION_ID,LINK_ID, SOURCE_PARTITION_ID,SOURCE_NODE_ID,TARGET_PARTITION_ID,TARGET_NODE_ID,TYPE,LOCAL_CHANGE_TIME,ATTR FROM VP8657b26964d4c595a7430761c222f3b3_REL WHERE (((TARGET_NODE_ID=@.NODE_ID AND REL_BASE_TYPE=2)) AND LOCAL_CHANGE_TIME > @.LOCAL_CHANGE_TIME ) OR ((SOURCE_NODE_ID=@.NODE_ID AND REL_BASE_TYPE=2)) ORDER BY LOCAL_CHANGE_TIME DESC

Without underlined frament, query runs fine

IDbCommand.Parameters shows that there are exactly 2 parameters with different names: @.LOCAL_CHANGE_TIME and @.NODE_ID

Exception stack trace is:
System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll!System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.CompileQueryPlan() + 0xd5 bytes
System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll!System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.ExecuteCommand(System.Data.CommandBehavior behavior = Default, string method = "ExecuteReader", System.Data.SqlServerCe.ResultSetOptions options = None) + 0x145 bytes
System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll!System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.ExecuteReader(System.Data.CommandBehavior behavior = Default) + 0x2d bytes
System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll!System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlCeCommand.ExecuteDbDataReader(System.Data.CommandBehavior behavior = Default) + 0x1e bytes
System.Data.dll!System.Data.Common.DbCommand.System.Data.IDbCommand.ExecuteReader() + 0xa bytes

So, what this exception might mean? does it mean that a parameter might not be used multiple times in a query?

Unfortunately, that's precisely what it means. If you watch (with SQL Profiler, for example) how a query is run when you submit it with ADO, you'll see that it's fluffed and rumpled just a little bit -- in order to make parameters work. That fluff-and-rumple mechanism can't deal with the same parameter name being bound again.

You can rewrite your query to be a batch that assigns @.NODE_ID to a variable, then reference the variable in the query. Or, you can create @.NODE_ID1 and @.NODE_ID2, and spread those guys around in the query -- then bind the same variable in the client code to the two different values (that is, add two parameters, each with the same value as the other).

|||Thanks for your reply,

Is it an issue only with SQL Mobile (aka Everywhere) or this will also

be present in SQL Express and Full-Featured SQL Server or even in any

ADO.NET provider?

SQL Mobile seems not to support batch queries (maybe executing multiply commands within the same connection will work, but it's a pretty mess. )

Anyway, I'm going just to substitue this parameter manually:
com.CommandText = com.CommandText.Replace("@.NODE_ID", "'"+guid.ToString()+"'");
